Welcome to the Sisters in Healthcare History Project formerly sponsored by Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, one of the fourteen comprehensive universities within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), and now a permanent exhibit of the Senator John Heinz History Center, a branch of the Smithsonian. This project consists of an exhibit showcasing the significant contributions made by sixteen orders of Roman Catholic Sisters to the healthcare history of Western Pennsylvania from 1847 to 1969. It features stories, photos, documents, artifacts, and historical clothing of Sisters and nurses covering this period.

The purpose of the exhibit is to provide insights and promote awareness on the part of the general public of the struggles and successes of the Sisters in establishing a formal healthcare delivery system in Western Pennsylvania at a time when few others were meeting this need. Currently, as far as we are aware, no such formalized record or exhibit exists that is completely dedicated to the healthcare history of these religious orders.

The Sisters were role models for women in society. Thousands of Sisters cared for hundreds of thousands of patients. Their work in education, healthcare, and social welfare institutions allowed them to hold responsible, powerful, and influential positions not available to many other women of their time. For this reason, the Sisters and the work they accomplished represent a valuable source of women's history.

As the hospitals and healthcare facilities of the Sisters close, and the number of Sisters declines, or, as orders leave traditional healthcare ministries to address other unmet needs of society, their history is threatened to be lost forever. Through our project, it is our intention to make sure that this does not happen.

WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO THANK OUR BENEFACTORS WITHOUT WHOSE KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY OUR WORK TO DATE WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.
